Notes:

2. “The Moldering Carriage In The Tall Grass” is from the album, Phoenix.

5. “4 Minutes, 18 Seconds Ago (abandoned farmhouse, Botswana, dusk)” was created from field recordings I made with several audio recorders in various locations in an abandoned farmhouse in Botswana, near the Limpopo River. The title refers to the immediate past, but the composition also references ghosts of the distant past. Acting as ”ears”, the recorders were placed in areas of the house where once there had been human activity. The first recorder was placed in the living room, by the fireplace. The second recorder was placed in the bathroom on the edge of the bathtub. The third recorder was placed in the hallway just before turning onto the veranda. The placement of recorders at various points in the house references the time traveled between them (e.g. you hear footsteps approaching before each one is shut off), and time travel is, again, a reference to the presence of former inhabitants. The recordings began just before sunset and continued until the full moon had risen, at which point the recorders were harvested by moonlight. The house had no roof, resulting in recorded sounds of the surrounding bushveld wildlife. However, intermingled with the dusk recording was a recording of the same location from several days earlier. The composition has a supernatural atmosphere, playing with timeframe literally in a matter of days as well as lifetimes. It is also the soundtrack to a forthcoming installation.

7. “Short Wave Radio-South Africa (1st movement)” is the first in a suite of compositions made from short wave radio recordings in South Africa.

8. & 9. “LIFE” and “DEATH” are Bliss Freaks tracks which were composed for Attn: Magazine (U.K.).

10. “SSqSq” is a duet with Gabe Raines, from an International Winners label compilation. Gabe and Gregory have a release titled Phantom Patterns, also on International Winners.

13. “Umzumbi, Dawn” is a track from the, as yet unreleased concept album, Uhren

15. “Scored Sequence, Körkarlen” is a live score for a flashback sequence in the Swedish film Körkarlen.

18. “That Train Has Already/WIll Never Arrive” is a track from the, as yet unreleased concept album, Uhren

Gregory Kramer is a musician and multidisciplinary artist working with sound, video and sculptural spaces. Taking inspiration from his archaeological curiosity of abandoned places and his interest in mythology, he searches for ghosts among the ruins and seeks to unearth evidence of forgotten histories through sound. His sound work uses various sources including field recordings, found materials, electronics, musical instruments and radio transmissions. Among other places, he has performed and/or presented in a Scottish forest, a Norwegian lighthouse, an Irish cemetery and the SouthAfrican bushveld. He recently performed Vampire State Building, an eight-channel surround work composed from lobby recordings of New York City landmark buildings and was featured in Mexico’s Sonom International Sound Art Festival 2015.
Early in his career, Gregory honed his musical skills playing in the rock, experimental and noise scenes and garnered favorable reviews from the likes of Metal Maniacs, Pitchfork.com and Signal to Noise with his band, Wetnurse. Decibel magazine gave Wetnurse’s self-titled album a 9 out of 10 and voted Wetnurse’s Invisible City album #8 out of their Top 40 Extreme Albums of 2008.
He also exhibited drawings as part of an internationally touring, group show including work by Richard Serra, David Byrne, Raymond Pettibon, Ozzy Osbourne and R. Crumb.
