Original Voices in Rhythms
Des pièces mémorables et uniques dialoguent ici les unes avec les autres comme j’aime dans ma pratique inviter les gens à se réunir pour le moment unique d’une rencontre enregistrée, former un duo et inventer de nouvelles formes de langage. Ma sélection est axée sur le transport de la voix, parfois les mots, sur les expressions mondiales et leurs rythmes, la musique de danse en faisant partie. Je suis venue au son par les radios communautaires du début des années 80, lieux de liberté d’expression, ainsi que par le télescopage de toutes sortes de genres musicaux. Ma passion était d’écouter les gens communiquer, y compris pour se poser en désaccord. Parce qu’à l’époque, avoir une opinion différente et débattre n’était pas un problème et faisait partie du quotidien. Ma principale attraction était pour les langues étrangères, celles que je ne pouvais pas comprendre. Mieux et musical !
Ce mix est donc politique. Il va d’une découverte récente – quelle mélodie grande ouverte ici (Steve Kuhn) aux chants traditionnels du patrimoine oral (les îles des Caraïbes, l’Espagne, le pays Inuit du Nord Canada, Cameroun, Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, Etats Unis), à des pièces personnelles faites de mes enregistrements de voyage(Venezuela, États-unis, Portugal, Niger, Serbie, Croatie et pays de l’Est), comme l’exemple du son de la dévotion dans ce meeting politique de Chavez (qu’est ce que l’on ressent quand un chef chante ..?) et des portraits / «rencontres» (avec V. Vale, ou encore avec une femme muette d’un village du Portugal), à un long morceau hypnotique de Phil Kline, à une pièce plutôt inhabituelle de Meredith Monk parce que j’aime la rythmique des moteurs, et à travers un mélange de poésie et de rap de talents féminins comme moyen de dire haut et fort et d’élever une voix commune.

Those are memorable, great, unique pieces dialoguing to each other as i love in my practice invite people to meet for the unique moment of a recorded encounter, to duet and invent a new form of language. My selection is focused on the transport of the voices, sometimes words, and on rhythms and worldwide expression, dance music is part of it. I came to sound through the community / free-speech radios of the early 80’s, also by telescoping all kind of musical genres. At the time hearing people communicating was my passion; including arguing of course. Because at the time, having a different opinion and debating was no problem and part of daily life. It has to be mentioned that my main attraction was on foreign languages, the ones i could not understand. Better ! Without saying this mix is politics.
It goes from a recent discovery – what a wide opened melody here (Steve Kuhn) to traditional singings from to the oral heritage (Caribbean Islands, Spain, Inuit Country-Northern Canada, Cameroon, Papua New Guinea, Usa) to personal pieces of my travelling recordings (Venezuela, Usa, Portugal, Niger, Serbia, Croatia and Eastern Countries), like the sound of the devotion in this Chavez political meeting (how does it feel when a chief is singing..?) and portraits / “encounters” (with V.Vale), to a long and hypnotic Phil Kline piece to a Meredith Monk one quite unusual, which i love cause my boy was dancing on it as a new born, and because i love the rhythmic of engines, and through a blend of poetry and rap, female hip hop talents as a ways to say out loud and raise a common voice.

Des sciences humaines étudiées à l’université à la radio pour Radio France Internationale, à la pratique du son au cinéma sur de nombreux films de fiction et documentaires, de l’enregistrement de terrain, à la pédagogie, à l’art / l’interaction sonore comme forme libre d’anthropologie et de géologie, jusqu’à la composition électronique, l’artiste sonore et musicienne française Gaël Segalen a développé une expérience globale et diversifiée dans le domaine du son depuis 25 ans.
Elle a appelé son projet IhearU (“je t’entends, je te comprends”), car il met l’accent sur la relation directe au monde par le son. Avec ses pièces psychogéographiques et compositions musicales, elle participe à divers parcours sonores, compilations, productions radiophoniques, installations, crée la musique pour des œuvres visuelles, notamment à partir d’archives, tout en voyageant pour collecter voix et sources d’inspiration.
My listening experience, Gaël Segalen
French sound artist and musician Gaël Segalen has been a genuine explorer of sound for more than 20 years. Besides her record label accreditations on Erratum Musical (France), Frm-at (UK), Firecracker Recordings (UK), Coherent States (Grèce), Les Ateliers Claus (BE), Mirae Arts (US), and her diploma in electroacoustic composition in the lineage of the GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales), she has worked for Radio France Internationale, as a sound mixer for film, before jumping onto many sound art psychogeographical projects under the name of IhearU and multimedia collaborations such as with artists Constanze Ruhm, Marlies PöschI, Shu Lea Cheang, also participating in various compilations, audiowalks, radio productions, online platforms, installations, while travelling the world to collect voices and inspiration for her musical compositions, and giving classes on sound to explore it’s therapeutic dimension, using it as a social tool to interact with diverse audiences.
She has played and engaged sonic conversations among others with Jean-Marc Foussat, Best available Technology, Aki Onda, Brandon LaBelle, Joachim Montessuis, duenn, Collectif Mu, Lutherie urbaine, Collectif Fusion, while she maintains the experimental electronic project Les Graciés with Eric Douglas Porter (Afrikan Sciences). She is also co-founder of Polyphones, a Parisian network dedicated to women in musical experimentation, and OWO, the electronic Open Women Orchestra.
Focused on polylistening, dissonance and new music, she manages to transpose the complexity of the world into electroacoustic and polyrhythmic soundscapes, bruitism and ‘DFR’ (Danceable Field Recording) compositions.
