Xabier Erkizia : sons boisés du Pays Basque

XABIER ERKIZIA

egurra*

A compilation of different field-recording made all along the Basque Country, where wood has a prominent presence. The use of wood pieces and/or instruments to create sound is related to the use of ancient technologies (some of them still working as mills, carpentry, winery, oil press, mountain works…) or rituals (traditional primitive carnival dances and rituals, holy week noisy celebrations) where this peculiar sonic artifacts don’t work only as an unavoidable noise or technical defect, but as rhythmical pulses, sometimes musical, that had been part of an almost disappearing soundscape.
All this tracks can be consulted individually (with additional texts and pictures) in www.soinumapa.net, the collaborative Basque Country sound map, online from 2005 and run by audiolab association.

*egurra means “wood”

plentzia_st_agatha
